Cannonball!

Do you remember when we first met?
We spent hours on that swingset
We'd repeat a similar sequence every day outside at recess
Another day was done, ready for another one
Remember sitting in a parked car, moonroof open, gazing out far
on a Pink Moon and a million stars, feeling like the world was all ours
Another day is done, ready for another one
And when we've got four walls, and people who depend on us
Will we still be ourselves? Will we take the plunge?
Cannonball!
I wanna go back to our old haunts, back to playgrounds and parking lots
Another day is done, ready for another one
We'll take the plunge, cannonball!

Table for one in this sterile light, with a window to talk to
I ordered a plain glazed so I wouldn't be loitering
The realization of my futility stared at me from the bottom of a cup of ice water
I couldn't sit comfortably cause the guy at the counter was looking at me funny
Not in education, employment, or training; oh, what a life
I never wanted it to be this way but here it is
I read the writing on the wall, it was full of names and obscenities,
scrawled in bright colors, vivid yet decrepit
Silly me, I'm in the city and this is just some old graffiti
and it's no more meaningful now than any plan I ever had for myself
I never wanted to be this way, a mindless pawn
I never wanted to have to hold on for this long
I never wanted to be this far gone
it's all wrong, it's all wrong, it's all wrong
And as I sing to the half eaten doughnut, I get a text from miles away
from someplace where I'll never be; at least not till I finally stand up
For now i'll take solace in my N. E. E. T. brothers
I never wanted it to be this way, but here it is

You woke up early on a Saturday morning in the middle of July,
sunlight streaming through the window before you; it looked so pretty you could die
You looked outside, you saw the trees and the houses that seemed so big when you were small
The dog would greet whoever pulled in the driveway where we used to play basketball
Everything's different, but nothing is wrong
It feels like home again; you're back where you belong
When you awoke you thought the house would be empty but you heard voices from afar
Your mom is upstairs and she's painting a portrait of your dad who's playing the guitar
Mom moved the sandbox except now it's a garden, the fort is all but firewood
Dad finished building up the back deck last summer; it landed right where they once stood
Everything's different, but nothing is wrong
It feels like home again; you're back where you belong
Life sure is different once you've gone off to college, where no one knows more than your name
Sometimes it's hard to come to terms with the knowledge that things will never be the same
Everything's different, but nothing is wrong
It'll feel like home again; you're right where you belong
